The Pine Avenue Community Center

Pine Avenue Community CenterIMPORTANT NOTE: For June, July, and August of 2026 the meeting location and time have changed: due to a conflict in scheduling, we are temporarily meeting at the Senior Center (799 Pine Ave, Carlsbad, CA 92008) adjacent to our current Pine Avenue Community Center location with the meeting running from 5-8 pm. There is ample parking and the meeting room is slightly smaller but will work for the 3 months listed. Starting September, we are back at the Community Center and the regular time slot from 4-7pm.

Beginning with the January 2026 meeting on January 7, 2026, the Palomar Orchid Society will hold its general meetings in the Activity Room 108 of the Pine Avenue Community Center located at 3209 Harding Street, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

The room is quite spacious and modern with more seating and table area. The facility has well lit parking.

Directions:

Take the I-5 freeway to Carlsbad Village Drive west. Make a left onto Harding St. The parking lot is on the right just past Pine Ave.

August 2022 – Rene Van Rems

Rene Van Rems

We are delighted to welcome Rene Van Rems, AIFD (American Institute of Floral Designers) to our society for the first time. Rene is “artist in residence” at the San Diego Botanic Garden and has produced 20 of the Gala in the Gardens fundraisers from its inception. Rene knows the garden well throughout his 42 year relationship with the former Quail Botanical Garden, ever since he landed from Amsterdam as a horticulture exchange student. He is the San Diego Botanic Garden Creative Director for the Palomar and San Diego County Orchid Society’s “World of Orchids”, which just finished a sell-out 6-week exhibition.

In his talk titled “Artistic Design of the World of Orchids Show at the San Diego Botanic Garden” Rene will share his creative insights as it relates to plant display, composition, and how to get the most visual value of each species. Rene will present a visually exciting lecture on the principles and elements of design, focusing on color, texture and proportion. He will also cover the subject of visual perception and the role our emotions play in viewing (artistic) works of art. Enjoy a custom produced “behind the scenes” tour of the highly popular SDBG “World of Orchids”. The plant table will consist of the remaining plants from Fred Clarke’s donated cattleyas plus a few others.

Rene is a Dutch born and educated horticulturist and designer, who is involved in floral industry styling, product development, education, and marketing. He is a multiple award-winning international artist and has performed his talents at many of the leading botanic gardens, arboreta and museums in the USA and abroad. He is an international speaker on trends and design in the flower and plant industry and he is the author of two well-received coffee table books on European floral design. Through his work, Rene has been invited to judge the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the Philadelphia Flower Show and many others.

May 2021 Culture Class – Photographing Your Orchids

Onc. hastilabium – Debby HallidayDebby Halliday, Jack Schaefer & Stewart Walton all really enjoy taking photographs of their orchids. We all strive for accurate and vibrant color, perfect details, and a quiet background. We have different approaches to achieving these goals and thought you might enjoy knowing more about how we do it.

We also have various ways of managing our photo libraries and utilizing our photos. Debby uses hers as a primary means of documenting the progress of her plants from year to year. She also shares her hi-res images with the club to use in its promotional activities.

Jack is careful with the background and staging of his plants, to highlight the shape and color of the flower. Stewart looks for good sharpness, contrast and color in his photos, whether indoors or outdoors. He uses his cellphone primarily, and often overrides its automatic features for the best shot. We will welcome your questions and hope you will come away with some ideas about taking better photos of your plants.

San Diego Botanic Garden – World of Orchids

The Palomar Orchid Society and the San Diego County Orchid Society are participating in a month’s long ‘World of Orchids Show‘ running from Saturday, April 3 through Sunday, May 2 at The San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas in their new conservatory. The conservatory is a beautiful, state-of-the-art greenhouse, with a cement floor, humidity control, shading, ventilation and security. The exhibition is being designed and installed by the SD Botanic Garden staff with several of our society’s members providing blooming orchids for the display as well as select plants from commercial nurseries. Society member plants will be exchanged out as needed on Tuesdays during the show. In addition to the outstanding specimens, visitors will enjoy high-style artistic floral design ideas created with cut orchids and other unique flower arranging materials designed by Creative Director, Rene van Rems, AIFD. The display will change and evolve throughout the month, so plan to visit frequently! On weekends, visitors can shop for unusual and unique orchids at the grower direct orchid market. At present, SDCOS members will be selling orchids the weekends of April 3-4 and 9-11. The Orchid Conservation Alliance will sell on April 9-11 and Lico Orchids will sell the weekends of April 3-4, 9-11 and April 30 thru May 2. Additionally, Everything Orchids and Bird Rock Tropicals will sell during the event. The garden is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. There will be vendors every Sat. and Sun. and a few on select Fridays. Admission to World of Orchids is included with the Garden entrance fee or Garden membership. All attendees must make a reservation online to obtain tickets for entry. Entrance is free for AOS members but you still need to register for tickets (use the “Reciprocal” category during checkout) and show your ticket and AOS membership card upon entry. Make your reservation today for this exciting, month’s long show.

Annual Holiday Dinner 2019

The Palomar Orchid Society will be holding their annual Holiday Dinner and Officer installation on Wednesday, December 4 at the Lake San Marcos Pavilion. This is the same location as last year and located right next to our current monthly meeting location at 1105 La Bonita Dr., San Marcos, CA 92078.

If you are interested in attending our fun dinner to celebrate the holidays with fellow orchidists, please fill out the form below and send it in with your check no later than Wednesday, November 20 as specified in the form below. No payments or reservation are accepted at the door!

The cost is $26 per person and includes an entrée of your choice as well as an orchid plant for members in good standing. The Palomar Orchid Society will be holding their annual Holiday Dinner and Officer installation on Wednesday, December 6 at Chan’s Chinese Restaurant located at 1650 Descanso Avenue, San Marcos, just off Highway 78 at the Rancho Santa Fe exit (ph. The cost is $26 per person and includes a multi-course dinner and an orchid plant for members in good standing. Members may bring a guest if they choose to pay for them. All current members are eligible except last year’s honoree, which was Debra.

We will vote at the next meeting to determine who will receive the honor and the name of the honoree will be revealed at the holiday dinner in December.
